The Open Book pencils in first day of business
The organizers behind The Open Book -- a new book co-op opening in the former Schwartz Bookshop space in Shorewood -- plan to open on Nov. 2. This is good news for some, but others wonder if another independent bookshop will saturate the market.

Telling Groppi's story
Congressman John Lewis once told me that there should be a book on Father James Groppi and I was just the person to write it. But Congressman Lewis really meant that Groppi's work deserves to be explored and celebrated and written down for posterity. That I do it is hardly the important part.

Having worked at Schwartz Bookshop for years before coming to OnMilwaukee.com, it's a given that I know fellow New York-native Daniel Goldin. We worked together for a long time and we even roomed together when on trips to the annual bookselling convention. So, because we're friends, rather than me telling you about him and his qualifications for transforming the Downer Schwartz, I'll let him to you himself.
