I consider myself very lucky when I can see one of my favorite bands live in concert. When they come back a year later, it's like an overtime bonus show. But three out of four summers in a row? That's concert nirvana. And when we're talking about The Brian Jonestown Massacre, a band that must be heard live to be fully appreciated, well, you've just described me in my "happy place."

On Friday, The Brian Jonestown Massacre will play its third show in as many years in Milwaukee, visiting Turner Hall for a 7 p.m. gig. It's hard to classify this band, but having seen their last two shows in Milwaukee, I can safely say that BJM is one of my all-time favorites. From his home in Berlin, front man Anton Newcombe said he likes playing in Milwaukee. "Turner Hall is right next to a German beer garden, right?"

Even though the Dandy Warhols have played together since 1994, the quartet from Portland is showing no signs of slowing down. Their new album, "This Machine" drops next week and again, the band heads out on tour. You may know the band from some of their catchy hits like "Bohemian Like You." Or, you may have seen "Dig!," a documentary that compares them with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and as we learned, is completely despised by the Dandy's frontman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, who we caught up with by phone.

I don't know every BJM song -- they have at least 16 albums out -- but I know enough to consider myself more than a casual fan. Saturday night, they played all of my favorites, and the songs I didn't recognize sounded great, too.

BJM quite literally put on one of the best shows I've ever seen Friday. With eight musicians on stage, including a surprise addition of original guitarist Matt Hollywood and tambourine player Joel Gion, the band pounded out song after song in an astounding three-hour set.
