Shortly after I heard the news about last Sunday's Sikh Temple shooting, I couldn't help but think back to my day in April with Milwaukee police offers participating in the Tactical EMS Training class at the Waukesha County Technical College. The scenarios I watched matched up so closely with the real-life shooting in Oak Creek, that I had to give Officer Chad Stiles, the instructor at the class, a call to get his reaction.

When police find themselves in a really bad situation there's only one way out: and that's to rely on their training to save victims and each other when a scene is too hot for traditional EMTs. While police are regularly shouldered with the job of neutralizing a threat, the task of tending to the injured while an active shooter looms is very perilous. But training can make such situations more familiar. Our Andy Tarnoff was fortunate enough to join along in a recent training exercise.
