Five Mod Four hones knack for honest pop
It's been a few years since Milwaukee's The Five Mod Four released a split EP with The Wrens. Other than running a pair of labels -- Contraphonic and No Karma -- what has front man Michael Wojtasiak been up to? Well, he and his band mates were in Detroit recording "Whiskers," the new full-length out now on Contraphonic, with Dave Melkonian, who also performed on the record.

Formed just three years ago, Milwaukee quartet The Box Social has been providing a running commentary to listeners with a new EP each year, starting with 2003's "What, Too Soon?" The latest installment is "Blown to Bits," with five high-energy, pop-infused tunes.

Clyde Federal: banking on a different approach to being a band
Whatever this Chicago outfit's system may be, it's working. Even without a full-length disc, Clyde Federal have played with Stereo Total, Andrew Bird, Archer Prewitt and The Figgs. On June 4, they play with The Five Mod Four at Points East.
