Merger proposal is a reminder that MPS must engage communities

The proposed merger of 68th Street School with nearby 81st Street School has been on our radar, as you've likely noticed if you follow what I write about Milwaukee schools. The issue is an important one. Folks across the city are watching to see how this plays out. Future enrollment in the district may not be affected not simply by how it ends, but also by how it is handled by MPS.

MPS sends out budget priorities survey

Milwaukee Public Schools is sending kids home with a survey asking parents to list their spending priorities, from 1 to 14, for upcoming budgets. Principals need to finalize their school budgets by Thursday, which means the survey arrives a little late. However, the district does have time to alter budgets, as happened last year after education cuts arrived from Madison.

Future of 68th St. School program up for discussion at public meeting Thursday

The offices of Alds. Michael Murphy and Jim Bohl have organized a public meeting Thursday evening at Milwaukee School of Languages, 8400 W. Burleigh St., to discuss a community proposal to merge the early childhood program of 68th Street School into nearby 81st Street School.

Competing plans for 68th Street School program head to the board

Since the Milwaukee Board of School Directors gave MPS superintendent Dr. Gregory Thornton an extra month to work out a relocation site for the early childhood education program at 68th Street School, which the board voted in December to close at the end of this school year, community activists have been busy working on a plan of their own. Next week, their plan will face off with the district's proposal at the January meeting of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors.
