In case you missed it, Tory Miller - Madison chef, restaurateur and lover of all culinary things Wisconsin - brought home the James Beard Award for Best Chef of the Midwest region this year. Jason Gorman recently had the chance to catch up with him and asked him to share some of his insight.

Meritage chef and owner Jan Kelly is still stunned that she is a semifinalist for a James Beard Foundation Award. Kelly is among 20 persons named semifinalists for the prestigious best chef's award in the Midwest region. Dan Van Rite of Hinterland and Justin Aprahamian of Sanford are also on the list, which will be narrowed down to five next Monday.

Local boy done good. That could easily have been the headline for this featured chef profile. Born and raised in the Milwaukee area multiple Beard Award-nominee Justin Aprahamian -- chef de cuisine at no less than Sanford Restaurant, 1547 N. Jackson St. -- started out working in his uncle's catering business.

In a category that encompasses eight Midwestern states, Wisconsin makes one of the strongest showings with four nominees for "Best Midwest Chef" plus nominees for "Rising Star Chef of the Year" and "Outstanding Restaurant."
