The Batterman Ensemble of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music's Jazz Institute has been selected as a finalist to compete in the Charles Mingus High School Jazz Competition in New York City. A concert will be held to help raise funds for the trip.

Milwaukee native Sam Neufeld brings his jazz quartet home for a gig at VIA Downer, 2625 N. Downer Ave., on Monday, Jan. 14 from 7:30 until 10 p.m. Neufeld currently lives in Brooklyn, and studies jazz at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

If news that local jazz musician and organizer Jamie Breiwick has yet another new release comes as a bit of a shock, you're not alone. The ever-occupied, constantly creating Breiwick is a musical force of nature. His new record, "Music of Thelonious Monk: Friday the 13th," is available only as a free download.
