Open Book shows Milwaukee's passion for indie bookselling
The other day a group hoping to open a co-op bookshop announced its plans to put that store in the former Schwartz Bookshop, 4093 N. Oakland Ave., in Shorewood. It's great to see the passion for indie bookselling in Milwaukee continues after the demise of Schwartz and Broad Vocabulary.

Goldin's Boswell Book Co. promises changes
Having worked at Schwartz Bookshop for years before coming to OnMilwaukee.com, it's a given that I know fellow New York-native Daniel Goldin. We worked together for a long time and we even roomed together when on trips to the annual bookselling convention. So, because we're friends, rather than me telling you about him and his qualifications for transforming the Downer Schwartz, I'll let him to you himself.

Hurley banks new bookshop on devoted customers
Buying a popular, landmark local business sounds like a winning idea, right? But what if that 82-year-old business just announced it's closing? Veteran bookseller Lanora Hurley is diving in and doing just that by keeping the Schwartz shop in Mequon open as Next Chapter Bookshop.

Goldin is just the man to carry on the Schwartz legacy
Eighty-two years after Harry Schwartz and his partner opened Casanova Books in the back of a Downer Avenue hair salon, Schwartz's shops are closing. It is truly the end of an era. Although there are businesses as old and considerably older still in Milwaukee, few have had the kind of runs Schwartz did. And that's because Harry and, later, his son David, never said never.
