In 1938, newlyweds Rosalie and Alex Ferrante established the first Ferrante's Restaurant in central Milwaukee. A friend and I decided to check out the popular restaurant opened by their kids in Mequon, and we were pleasantly surprised by a Texas Ranch Pizza.

Mechanic turns talents to bicycles, new shop in Mequon

After winning scholarships in national high school auto repair contests, Nicholas Moroder was speeding toward a career in the car business. He took a detour, after he found he hated working on other people's cars. Moroder found a happier application of his mechanical skills - for him and his customers - by fixing bicycles. And the discovery led to the start of the BelgianWerkx bicycle studio and gallery in Mequon, set to open on Jan. 14.

Help a firefighter in need

My friend (and Milwaukee's best bartender) Paul Kennedy of Tonic Tavern shared a sad story with me, and I'd like to share it with you, too. John Pipkorn is a Mequon firefighter - a 25-year veteran who's risked his life for others - and now he needs some help. On Oct. 18, his own house caught fire, and his wife suffered serious injuries while jumping from a second story window. She's still in the hospital.
