At a press conference held at Discovery World yesterday, Mayor Tom Barrett announced that the USS Milwaukee, the fifth U.S. Navy ship to be named for the Cream City, will hold its commissioning on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. at Veteran's Park.

On June 3, 2014 at 1 p.m., ground will break on a very special place for the families of our country's injured soldiers. Fisher House of Wisconsin will be located on the VA Medical Center grounds and will provide a "home away from home" for family members while a soldier receives medical care.

Though I've driven past the U.S. Coast Guard Station at the foot of the Hoan Bridge in Bay View for years, I never really gave it much thought. When I arrived there last week for a trip out to the Breakwater Lighthouse (link), I was surprised by how much hustle and bustle there was and by how little I knew about it.
