On Friday afternoon, WMCS-AM 1290 halted its broadcast stunt of all Elvis Presley music to debut "1290 Martini Radio." Milwaukee Radio Alliance stopped its long-running "Talk of the Town" format that featured local and national African-American progressive talk shows last week Tuesday.

It was a shock to hear that Milwaukee's home for black talk radio had decided to change formats Tuesday. It was even more a shock when the station started playing Elvis to make sure listerners got the point.

At 10 a.m. today, WMCS-AM 1290 changed formats and informed staffers of a change in direction.

Often on the airwaves, the voices tend to be one-way. Commercials sell their services or goods, singers and musicians entertain you, announcers tell you the weather conditions and read headlines. But on some spots on the dial, the tone is different. Time is given to talk, to express feelings, share thoughts and seek engagement.
