When it comes to the classic story of "A Christmas Carol," Scrooge has always been the star. But just as important to the story are the Cratchits, who embody the Christmas spirit and the human spirit so essential to Dickens's fable. For the past few years, the two characters have been played in the Milwaukee Rep's annual production by the same two Milwaukee actors: Jonathan Wainwright and Marti Gobel.

We all know what a "Scrooge" is: a bitter, hateful penny-pincher with not an ounce of fun, joy or charity in his cold, cold heart. Well, watch your opinion change if you are lucky enough to see the Milwaukee Rep's 38th consecutive production of that classic holiday tale, "A Christmas Carol," at the glorious Pabst Theater.

Scrooge speaks: Donahue talks about the Dickens classic

Christopher Donahue isn't what you'd expect from an actor playing Ebenezer Scrooge, one of the famous grumps of stage, screen and literature. He's gracious, soft-spoken and a bit self-depreciating. The only Scroogish thing about him is his fully-grown beard, a mutton chops/mustache combination technically called "a hulihee" (he looked it up).

"A Christmas Carol" returns for a lighthearted 37th year

The Milwaukee Rep has opened its 37th production of "A Christmas Carol," the Charles Dickens masterpiece of a story about hope and despair, darkness and bitterness and both the quest and capacity for redemption. It is a sumptuous production, a feast for the eyes during the holiday season.
