"Real Pirates" save the day

Published April 27, 2013

"Real Pirates" is worth a visit for those who enjoy learning about world history, for people looking for a break from the ordinary, and, of course, for kids who like pirates.

"Clybourne Park" makes the audience gasp

Published Feb. 2, 2013

Courage comes in many forms and styles, but when you have the spine to wrap sadness and danger in a blanket of comedy, you end up with something that is really brave. That is the case of the stunning production of "Clybourne Park" that opened Friday night at the Milwaukee Rep.

Why the Milwaukee County Historical Society rules

Published Dec. 20, 2012

Until yesterday, it had been a while since I visited the Milwaukee County Historical Society. But now that I work Downtown again, I'm pledging to come back more frequently. You should, too.

"Long John" Hubbard made his name both in and out of the ring

Published Dec. 8, 2012

Fifty-nine years ago this month a Milwaukee heavyweight boxer called "Long John" Hubbard got what was coming to him for putting up what a newspaper called "the best fight of his career." Three months in the House of Correction.

The Mad Bomber of Milwaukee

Published Nov. 9, 2012

One of my favorite parts of OnMilwaukee.com is "This Day in Milwaukee History." We built this homepage widget a decade ago and have continued adding to it ever since. Occasionally, it teaches me something, too.

Marti's site brings Old Milwaukee to the web

Published Sept. 27, 2012

Yance Marti's site won't set any records for traffic and handsome though it is in an understated way, it won't win any swanky New York web design awards - though it did win the Wisconsin Historical Society's 2011 web site award - but that's beside the point. OldMilwaukee.net is a place for the passionate and the mildly interested to share knowledge, get answers to questions and have a little history-based fun.

Bradley Tech students connect the past, present and future

Published Sept. 19, 2012

The Milwaukee Observatory is an impressive, exhaustively-researched public art installation and urban archeology exhibit at Bradley Tech High School. The culmination of Discovery World's 15-week Milwaukee Observatory program, the site contains 16-foot "personal archeology banners," "Faces of the Future" boards with photographs of students holding historical objects and a Cultural Memory House inspired by the 1840 home of Walker's Point neighborhood pioneer George Walker.

We can see ourselves in the Milwaukee of 32 years ago

Published Aug. 23, 2012

It looks like ancient history. At mom's house a few months ago I found this: an August 1980 edition of National Geographic. The distinctive border still a golden yellow but the photographs inside, especially in a 22-page spread on Milwaukee - "More Than Beer" - have a long-lost color to them; an almost unreal range of dull hues.

Calling the final round

Published Aug. 22, 2012

On April 24, 1953, a national television audience viewing a world lightweight championship fight in Boston was disgusted when challenger Tommy Collins was knocked down 10 times by champion Jimmy Carter before referee Tommy Rawson got around to stopping the mismatch in the fourth round. Just 10 days later, a well-known Milwaukee referee was driven out of boxing by fans and reporters who thought he stopped a fight too soon.

Road warriors, rebels & rock stars: 100 years of the leather jacket

Published July 19, 2012

The leather jacket. It's not just a piece of clothing. It's a symbol, a uniform, a battle flag - a coat of armor even. And more than anything, it's just plain cool. Tonight the Harley-Davidson Museum gathers three people who were invaluable in creating the exhibit to participate in a roundtable discussion.

Exploring Wisconsin architectural history at MPL

Published June 20, 2012

Milwaukee has a rich history and, fortunately, a passion for preserving it, too. Take, for example the Wisconsin Architectural Archive, housed at the Milwaukee Public Library. Founded in 1975 by Thomas L. Eschweiler - yes, of THAT Eschweiler family - and a few others, the collection, housed within the Central Library's Art & Music department, archives more than 20,000 architectural drawings by nearly 500 Wisconsin architects.

"The Orchard" rises again - online

Published June 13, 2012

You have visited the site of Milwaukee's most historic ballpark probably hundreds of times, and you probably never knew it.

Urban spelunking in an old Milwaukee schoolhouse

Published April 8, 2012

As a kid, the lower levels of the school were entirely off limits to students and thus seemed extremely mysterious to me. So, when, thanks to the building engineer, I recently got an impromptu tour of the building's spaces that are rarely seen by anyone beyond the engineer himself, it made me feel like a kid again.

Time marches "fourth"

Published March 5, 2012

Yesterday - Sunday, March 4 - marked 50 years on this planet for me. Birthdays bring about not only that gaze into what lies ahead, but an annual reflection and flush of the brain cells. For someone who grew up with a sports love affair, playing it, reading about it, reporting on it, walking, talking and writing about it, flashbacks often conjure up an athletic theme.
