First look: 24 hours with the new iPhone 6s

Published Sept. 26, 2015

This time around, the "S" seems to stand for "subtle." That's not the way Apple is positioning it, of course, but as a user who has owned every iPhone but the first, the 6s model appears to be such an incremental upgrade, most customers may never realize the difference. This review assumes that you have some familiarity with iPhones, and cuts to the chase with real-life examples instead of benchmarks

TV Tidbits: Apple plans a service that might make you rethink cable

Published March 18, 2015

This week, Apple plans to make you cancel your cable subscription. If that wasn't horrifying enough (at least for cable companies, that is) Wes Bentley is coming back to stir up more horror in "American Horror Story: Hotel," a couple of funny ladies and a former child star who once saw dead people join a sequel to IFC's "Spoils of Babylon" and a new teaser trailer for Fox's "Scream Queens" shows Emma Roberts and a demonic bubble gum bubble.

Apple Pay: not ready for prime time

Published Oct. 22, 2014

Apple's new killer app, Apple Pay, may indeed someday change global commerce for good. That day isn't here yet, however. Three days after launch, my experiences with the NFC-based payment / tap to pay system show that Apple Pay is still very, very beta. At this point, you may find yourself using it barely at all.

24 hours with the new iPhone 6

Published Sept. 20, 2014

I've had a full day now to play with the brand new iPhone 6. Like most pieces of new technology, it's a mixed bag. iPhones aren't new to me - I've owned every one but the first model, and I use mine nonstop as both a work and personal device. This model is different in many ways, but as usual, the biggest story here is the software, not the hardware.

24 hours with the new iPhone 5s

Published Sept. 21, 2013

I stood in line with the rest of the Apple fanboys yesterday, and at 9 a.m., I got my hands on the new iPhone 5s. I wanted the silver version, but like the gold one, they were all gone before the doors even opened at the Bayshore Apple Store. Instead, I bought the 32 GB Verizon Space Gray model, which is mostly just a black iPhone. I picked up the new $39 brown leather case with it, and it looks and feels really nice. After one day playing it with, I'm yet to be blown away.

I'm a Google (or, at least, I was)

Published March 13, 2013

Lindsay was a devoted Google user. But a nasty case of texting thumb lured her to the world of Apple and its one-fingered touchscreen and often infuriating loopholes.

72 hours with the new iPhone 5

Published Sept. 24, 2012

I've had three days now to play with the new iPhone 5. And, having owned every one of them but the first, I view this latest model as an evolutionary but not revolutionary upgrade. Here are a few of my impressions.

Early thoughts on the Steve Jobs bio

Published Oct. 27, 2011

I'm about one third of the way through Steve Jobs' authorized biography by Walter Isacsson, and while I might write a complete review whenever I finish it, I already have a few things to get off my chest.

A weekend with the new iPhone 4S

Published Oct. 17, 2011

Except for the first iPhone, I've owned them all, and I have purchased each of them on the day they were released. This weekend was no different. People are asking me the same question they ask me each year, "Should I buy this thing?" And as always, my answer is "maybe ... but probably."
