I'm almost embarrassed to admit that until this week, I hadn't paid a visit to the not-so-new Smoke Shack, 332 N. Milwaukee St. It's been on my list, along with a zillion other places, and finally I can check it off with a juicy, delicious checkmark. It's never a bad idea to have lunch with the owner, and Joe Sorge made sure I left Smoke Shack in a food coma. We went nuts with the Kansas City eggrolls ($8.25), brisket sloppy joe sliders ($10.75), the brisket "sammich" with kettle chips ($13.50), sweet potato fries ($3.50) and corn bread ($1.75).

If you haven't taken the opportunity to wander over to Ashley's Bar-B-Que at 1501 W. Center St., I might be tempted to offer you my condolences. But, I might be just as tempted to recommend you stop over at their newest location in Walker's Point, just to see what all the fuss is about.

Slip inside the new Smoke Shack on Milwaukee Street in the Historic Third Ward, and you enter a world quite unlike anything else Downtown. Barbecue is the fragrance in the air. Recorded blues is the music in the room. And community is the style of dining.

Why do Milwaukeeans like grilling so much? Is it just an excuse to be outside for a few more minutes? Is it because we so often tie grilling into tailgating? Perhaps it's just a primal urge to cook over an open fire. Maybe we just like brats.

Milwaukeeans seem to have a love-hate relationship with barbecue. It seems just about everyone claims they love slow-cooked or smoked barbecue, but yet, the demise of many well-intentioned barbecue joints in our area seems to speak in volumes. Silver Spur Texas Smokehouse BBQ, 13275 Watertown Plank Rd., Elm Grove, however, seems unafraid.

Sitting out on the patio with friends, enjoying some tasty brats, hamburgers, ribs and corn on the cob is a pastime that Wisconsinites have mastered as we have a considerably shorter time span in which to practice it. So what better libation to match up with your classic grill fair than ... wine, of course.

There isn't a parking lot more aromatic than the one in front of Speed Queen Bar B-Q, 1130 W. Walnut St. The scrumptious smell of beef and pork slow-sizzling over a hickory-and-apple wood fire could challenge even the staunchest vegetarian to reconsider.
