Rethinking the pole

Published Feb. 13, 2013

So, can the "stripper" pole be a positive piece of equipment - especially for women? Can it, as a fitness tool become an empowering activity that contributes to not only a more physically fit body, but to a healthier mind and self-image as well? According to Maureen Metzger, co-owner of the West Allis pole dancing fitness studio, Blush Pole Fitness and Dance: hell yes, it can.

New year, new reasons to love yoga

Published Jan. 17, 2013

Oh, yoga: the pasttime of hippies and stressed-out soccer moms alike, that blissed-out exercise of Hindu philosophers. It has no demographic, and so it bears no judgement. There's just something so delightfully zen about it (and yes, I realize that I'm mixing Eastern religions here). It's, like, 30 percent breathing, after all. I can get down with any workout regimen that includes something called "heart opening exercises." And it's a great time to get into yoga here in Milwaukee.

Buck-Kickin' Boot Camp brings sweat and energy to the Bradley Center

Published Jan. 11, 2013

Standing at center court in the BMO Harris Bradley Center, Fitness trainer B.J. Gaddour implored: "make your glutes glorious." Gaddour, an online fitness phenom from Milwaukee, pumped up the first ever Buck-Kickin' Boot Camp, an event organized by the Lululemon Shop in the Third Ward. It was an oversized version of the fitness Boot Camps that have transformed workouts from drudgery to party over the last decade.

Does this T-shirt make me look fat?

Published Nov. 16, 2012

Recently my work schedule caused a change in my lifestyle that included losing my "me" time for fitness and the discipline over the food I ate. I enjoyed it. A lot. But, when I pulled a favorite tee out of the drawer and struggled to pull it over my soft shoulders and padded middle, it hit me. This cannot go on any longer.

With precision and posture, CoreAlign corrects imbalances in mind and body

Published Aug. 24, 2012

After struggling to perform even the simplest exercise in the CoreAlign program, basically standing up straight, I quickly realized this new form of training was as difficult to execute as it is to explain. The goal is to develop harmonious movement, and my body hit all the wrong notes.

Centuries-old training builds new strength in focused athletes

Published July 6, 2012

Like most ambitious athletes trying a new training technique, I was set to hoist some serious weight in my first venture in the Superb Health "Saved by the Bell" Class. Not so fast. Trainer Nick Lynch imposes a precise and go-slow approach that seems counter to the whole circus strongman visions inspired by the steel balls with handles.

Are you a gym jerk?

Published April 12, 2012

Recently I was delving through the esoteric "Notes" feature of my Facebook page and reliving some of the more un-P.C. moments in my literary history when I found a rant I threw together on the subject of going to the gym.

Making sports accessible to all is goal of new venture

Published March 8, 2012

Outward appearances cannot possibly tell you the full story of Damian Buchman's life, because according to the so-called "experts" he isn't even supposed to be alive. Nothing short of a medical miracle, Buchman was supposed to have died from a rare form of bone cancer some 20 years ago.
