Local restaurants treasure the artichoke
If ever a vegetable were to have a cult-like following, it would be the artichoke. It's true: lovers of this big thistle plant are emphatic about it, whether the "heart" is chopped and served on pizza and in hot dips or the entire plant is hard boiled and devoured. Here's a list of Milwaukee eateries with artichoke dishes on the menu.

Rapid review: Palermo Villa
Although it has changed a bit over the years -- especially notable was the addition of windows to the once dark as night dining room -- one thing remains the same at Palermo Villa -- great pizza!

Fulbeli Deli is Koppa's bread and butter
Years ago, Koppa's Farwell Foods was predominantly a grocery store, but today, the corner market's main draw is the Fulbeli Deli. OnMilwaukee.com recently went on the job with experienced sandwich maker Emily Mowrer to observe her sammy-makin' magic.

On the town in Milwaukee: How diverse is your nightlife?
It was a conversation sparked by McBob's Bar and Grill. If you've never been, McBob's is part Irish tavern, part sports bar but mainly a local joint drawing a hefty portion of the surrounding Washington Heights neighborhood. They serve heaping mounds of corned beef, Irish beers on tap plus great deals on giant tacos.

Retreating to "recession worthy" bars and restaurants
These are hard economic times, there's no question of that. We've said goodbye to dozens of local boutiques and businesses and corporate layoffs seem sadly imminent in several sectors of our economy. But going out to eat or out for a drink, there seem to be wait times, full dining rooms and packed bars.

My classic, local go to: Nessun Dorma
There is a homey feel to Nessun Dorma, more than likely a result of their first floor house location. From the door jams, to the molding, to the heavy wooden doors, Nessun Dorma reminds me very much of my grandparents house, were they trendy and Italian. Unfortunately, they were neither. But Nessun Dorma conveys an indescribable comfort; the comfort of casual, quality dining and the kind of place you're bound to run into someone you know. And if you don't? It's the kind of place you can safely assume you'll be interested in talking with the stranger down the bar.

Norfolk knows Brew City wine scene
Most OnMilwaukee.com readers that know the name Nate Norfolk, recognize it from his work as a local musician -- currently in The Candliers. But Norfolk was a long-time employee at Downer Wine & Spirits, where he could always be counted on to uncork good wine advice with a smile.

Reader poll
Would you rather suffer through a December of sub-zero temperatures and blizzards or a first-round playoff loss at the hands of Brett Favre?
I'll take the Ice Age and a Packers win.
I'd rather see the Packers lose to Favre so I can stay warm.
This is like choosing the least painful way to die.
