Reebok Spartan Race has created the Wisconsin Spartan Sprint at Miller Park, and it will take place on Sept. 7. The three-mile course is a head-to-head, time trial, speed-style event, with the unique twist of incorporating numerous and challenging obstacles.

Registration for the Brewers Mini-Marathon and 10K is open and registrants receive the lowest price to participate when signing up prior to Wednesday. The 2013 race is scheduled for Sept. 28. New for the second year of the "Brewers Mini" is the addition of a 10K race.

Chellie deGelleke ran a marathon every day for five consecutive days and finished the first leg of the MS Run the US Relay full of admiration. Not for herself, but the people who live with multiple sclerosis and "are running a marathon every day of their lives just to function or find some sort of comfort within their discomfort." It's the kind of revelation one can find in distance running, or in this case, ultra-distance running.

Sarah Knowles claimed a Guinness Book record running her very first half marathon. And that accomplishment was secondary, almost an afterthought, easily surpassed by her son's smile. She walked to support the horse-riding therapy program at LifeStriders in Delafield, which has greatly benefited her son, Matthew.

Sean Osborne is giving old cross-country runners like me a chance to relive those varsity experiences with a new race series, the Wisconsin Trail Assail, starting in May. The six-race series includes 5K and 10K cross-country races in Waukesha County Parks: Menomonee Falls, Nashotah, Minooka, Fox River and Muskego.

The Brewers Community Foundation's 15th Annual 5K Famous Racing Sausages Run/Walk will be held at Miller Park on July 20, starting at 8 a.m. Registration is now open. The unique feature of this event is that participants actually get to test their skills against the Klement's Famous Racing Sausages, who also run the course.

More than a runner, Parker Rios is a survivalist. A husband, father and human resources executive, he has no time or inclination to race the typical 10K or marathon. His pursuits are epic: early-morning training runs of eight hours, pulling a car tire with a rope, and races spanning 135 miles across the snow-covered wilderness of northern Minnesota. Late last month, the 46-year-old from Brookfield won the run division of the Arrowhead 135, the annual race from International Falls to the Fortune Bay Casino in Tower.

For years, their bodies swelled with fat. After 200 miles, their hearts swelled with gratitude. The team of 12 runners, led by Rik Akey, joyfully finished the Ragnar Relays Florida Keys earlier this month, and celebrated a huge accomplishment built upon hundreds of small ones, overcoming obesity and maintaining fitness.

Even on chilly weekends in November, runners have at least a half-dozen 5K races to choose from. Only one of them emphasizes cooperation over competition, and gives all its young participants bib No. 1. The Girls on the Run of Greater Milwaukee, an expanding youth development effort, hosts its first outdoor 5K Turkey Trot on Sunday, Nov. 18, in Greenfield Park.

If you'd asked me a year ago what the first thought that popped into my head when someone mentioned "beer run," my response would definitely not be 13.1 miles. However, today that's my only thought. Over the weekend, I accomplished a fitness goal I never dreamed imaginable or ever really had in mind as an obtainable goal.
