Sturm Special Effects sprinkles faux snow over Hollywood

Dieter Sturm may not be a household name, but for about 30 years, his work has been all over some of your favorite Hollywood movies. Yes, fitting for a Wisconsinite, Sturm's business is snow, and when a Hollywood production needs to call in anything from a flurry to a blizzard, Sturm and his Lake Geneva-based company Sturm Special Effects bring the storm.

This latest snow fall made me realize something. I've never called dibs here. I'm not alone. I don't see any Milwaukeeans shoveling out angled parking spots or street parking spots and calling dibs on their handiwork. You know, "dibs." See, this is a real thing that real people do - specifically 90 miles south of us in Chicago. And it's serious business.


Snow emergency lifted

The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works has lifted the snow emergency and the 4-inch rule as of noon on Tuesday, Feb. 3. In addition, DPW has completed its overnight snow operations in the 5-Day Parking Exception Area.
