New year, new reasons to love yoga

Published Jan. 17, 2013

Oh, yoga: the pasttime of hippies and stressed-out soccer moms alike, that blissed-out exercise of Hindu philosophers. It has no demographic, and so it bears no judgement. There's just something so delightfully zen about it (and yes, I realize that I'm mixing Eastern religions here). It's, like, 30 percent breathing, after all. I can get down with any workout regimen that includes something called "heart opening exercises." And it's a great time to get into yoga here in Milwaukee.

A foot in the yoga teacher's mouth

Published Oct. 8, 2011

Should any teacher, fitness professional or coach tell anyone to lose weight for any reason other than if weight is jeopardizing a student's health? Just like too much "hand to mouth" can create physical weight gain for yoga students, "foot in mouth" can create bigger issues for teachers giving unsolicited diet recommendations.

Taking the alternative path

Stifle your snickers - I am all about "vibes" and "energy." So, when I decided to treat my vertigo with a Western medical approach - a lot of people were shocked that the West Coast, hippy dippy yogi was trying what was usually her last resort as a first response.

Shanti, Shanti, Om

Published Jan. 19, 2011

"Indians are not afraid to die." Those were the not-so-comforting words I heard from our driver as we were playing chicken with oncoming traffic during a six hour drive north from Delhi.  I took that moment to remind him that Americans have not quite mastered the "live each moment like it's your last" mentality.
