Summerfest made a few big announcements today, revealing that the Avett Brothers will co-headline with the already-announced Violent Femmes at the Marcus Amphitheater on Opening Day, June 26. Officials also announced headliners for the grounds stages.

Some people would argue that rock is dead, but I, as well as everyone else present at the BMO Harris Pavilion Thursday night, think differently. For those in the packed house, rock isn't dead; it's just been renamed folk and given a twangy, energetic kick by The Avett Brothers.

I admit that sometimes these days, I'm a little disappointed by the Summerfest schedule. But I don't blame the Big Gig. Bob Babisch and his team have a lot of experience and they know what fest-goers in Milwaukee want. It's just that my tastes often diverge (pun intended) and it's seemed that the bands I want to see aren't "Summerfest bands." But that's changed a bit over time and in the biggest way in recent memory this year. Look at opening day, for a start.

The Avett Brothers are returning to the Riverside Theater for two nights in November.

When this week's Milwaukee show -- Saturday, March 6 at the Riverside supporting The Avett Brothers -- was first booked, it was slated for Turner Hall Ballroom. But due in part to the Avetts, but certainly in part to opener The Low Anthem's growing momentum, the gig was moved to the Riverside to meet demand for tickets.
