The Bonanza Shopping Center is not even a glimmer of what it once was, but Gianelli's Pizza and Chicken Man are doing their best to keep some life in the building, and I think they're doing a good job. They blew me away with the texture and sweetness of their handmade sauce - and did I mention there were strips of bacon on my pizza?

In recent years, bacon found its way into everything from cupcakes to lip gloss and now has an almost cult-like following. Is veggie bacon - otherwise known as "faken" or "facon" - experiencing a rise in popularity, too?

Bacon is everywhere, and what once was a food trend has morphed into a cultural phenomenon. I think it's safe to say that the whole bacon craze is going to stick around whether you like it or not - so why not embrace it?

If the bacon craze is winding down, don't tell that to the Saloon on Calhoun, which recently changed its name to the Saloon on Calhoun With Bacon. The popular western suburban sports bar and grill, nestled in a most unexpected location at 17000 W. Capitol Dr., is going bananas for bacon, putting the pork in everything from cocktails to apps to desserts.

The Wisconsin State Fair offers multiple bacon items on a stick, including chocolate-covered bacon on a stick, deep-fried cream cheese with bacon on a stick, bacon-wrapped water chestnuts on a stick and bacon-wrapped shrimp tempura on a stick. But local Chef Brian Moran will dish up stick-less bacon dishes on Friday, Aug. 13 for Bacon Lovers' Day.
