National Signing Day kicked off the college football season for many last week as fans across the country watched TV breathlessly and refreshed smartphones and computers incessantly all to see what teenager is picking what college. It's usually a day of excitement, yet if you're a Badgers fan you can't help wonder what the fuss is about.

Bret Bielema's sudden departure from the University of Wisconsin has once again highlighted the fact the Big Ten has struggled to find (and keep) quality coaches in football. Wisconsin has a chance to prove its program, and its conference, are big time.

It's been a hard season for Wisconsin and its rabid fan base. They've gotten some bad breaks and even laid an egg or two. Win the Rose Bowl, and put that on top of the most dominant college football performance I've ever seen in the Big Ten title game and the season goes down as a resounding success.

Last year, Wisconsin Badgers running back Montee Ball was one of the best offensive players in all of college football. He set Big Ten rushing records, and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He came back for his senior year to compete for a national title and improve his draft stock. So far, not so good.

The 2012 college football season kicks off this week, and the Wisconsin Badgers host the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday in Madison. The Badgers are talented, but there are a variety of off-field factors that may lead them to a national championship.
