The Avett Brothers return to Milwaukee on June 10

It would seem the answer to The Avett Brothers' song "Will You Return?" is, "Yes, and often," as the folk band announced this morning that it will come back to Milwaukee next summer for a show at the BMO Harris Pavilion on the Summerfest grounds.

The BMO Harris Pavilion just doesn't really seem like a solidly punk venue, and the question that kept gnawing at the back of my mind was this: Could Gogol Bordello really overcome this high-budget stage with blue plastic chairs and bleachers to sit in? Could it still deliver that same angry music that I love? To answer my own question: Yes.

How on Earth does one explain the ongoing success of The Flaming Lips? Don't get me wrong, frontman Wayne Coyne and company make interesting and engaging music and put on a hell of a show, but since when has that been enough? We found out Saturday night at Summerfest.


Old-fashioned folk fiends Punch Brothers tap the BMO Harris Pavilion roof

The old-school folk group Punch Brothers tried something different and set their goals somewhere new Friday night at the BMO Harris Pavilion. Lead singer and maniacal mandolinist Chris Thile said their mission was not to raise the roof, but "tap the roof," delicately nudging the ceiling with his pointer fingers. Well, congratulations Punch Brothers; you tapped the roof Friday night at Summerfest. And then some.
