Summerfest's opening day marks a sort of homecoming for Fruit Bats. Though the group got its start in the Windy City in the late '90s, its frontman and founder Eric Johnson, who has also worked with Califone and The Shins, was born in Kenosha and spent part of his youth there. Fruit Bats play the U.S. Cell Stage at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27.

Califone is about one-third of the way through its "Roots & Crowns" tour -- one that began with three April gigs in Scotland and is now weaving through the States, landing the band here in Milwaukee on Saturday, May 19 at the Pabst Theater.

Jon Langford -- from the '70s punk band The Mekons -- fronts The Wee Hairy Beasties. The family-friendly group releases their new CD "Animal Crackers" on Sunday, Nov. 5 at Alverno's Pitman Theatre.
