Sun Fair to rise on Mitchell Street

The Sun Fair, the South Side's largest street carnival, will kick off at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 30. It runs until 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 1 on Historic Mitchell Street, between 7th and 11th Streets.

Walk to the fringe of the State Fair's midway, past the Ferris wheel and the water gun games and the lemonade stand, and you'll find a large, colorful tent featuring a dozen painted signs reading "weird women" and "lizard man" and "circus oddities." We paid $5 and pulled back the flap to take a peek at a modern sideshow.

Summerfest had a slow start in the early years. Riding to the rescue was Milt Kaufman and his "Million Dollar Midway." The Midway was a cash cow and although it wasn't part of Summerfest, it operated adjacent to and at the same time as the music festival.
