Larger nonprofits raise millions to fight cancer, save endangered species or fight domestic violence. Budde raises thousands, primarily to encourage people to give. Give what? Whatever they can.

It can be an intense, lonely time for mothers in the NICU, even on Mother's Day. That's a part of the reason why friends Amy Scott and Erin Nevicosi created the Grateful Hearts Giving Network. The fledgling charity organization was founded to give people a chance to give back to those in times of need - in this case, those in the NICU - by donating and assembling useful items into gift bags.

It's a harsh observation from a mother who endured the often insensitive responses of friends and family members after the loss of a child via stillbirth and was stunned by the lack of medical and charitable efforts to prevent late-term infant deaths. "People don't want to talk about it. Nobody wants to talk about it at all," said Mindy Mueller, who delivered Abigail, at 37 weeks of pregnancy. "Not talking about it is exactly why it keeps happening."
