That Terry Tanger - a member of the X-Cleavers, King Solomon and other bands - was battling cancer was news to some. But what absolutely everyone knows about Terry is that he was a great guy. The kind of guy about whom no one ever had a bad word to say. The kind of guy that almost never had anything negative to say about anyone else.

It's been two years since we caught up with Milwaukee's own rawk rawyalty, namely Chief - a band I like to compare to Thin Lizzy but which frontman Chris Tishler has likened to Van Halen, UFO and Judas Priest. The media silence is mostly because the trio - comprising hard working Brew City music scene stalwarts Dave Benton on bass, Matt Liban on drums and singer and guitarist Tishler - has been on hiatus, keeping itself silent, too.

Animal Magnets (slight return?)

As if local musicians like Chris Tishler, Rob McCuen and Paul Wall didn't have enough to do, the trio has reformed its band Animal Magnets for what may or may not be a one-off show this week with The Plexi 3 and Van Gloria at Points East Pub. The band -- which also includes Cliff Ulsberger and Joel Beskow -- plays Saturday, June 13.

A hard-rockin', three-piece rock and roll outfit, Chief got together about three years ago when guitarist Chris Tishler and drummer Matt Liban -- who have been in numerous local bands over the years -- joined bassist Dave Benton and sort of unwittingly became a band. Chief celebrates a new EP with a CD release gig Friday, Jan. 23 at Frank's Power Plant in Bay View.
