As kids return to school this week, many MPS families are wondering about the future of their programs, thanks to a document that quietly seeped out in December, drawing immediate discussion. Nestled quietly into an MPS committee meeting agenda last month was a description of facilities and programmatic changes that district administration calls "Pathways Projects." We asked board member Claire Zautke about them.

When school opened for the majority of MPS schools this week, most every program had a new 30-hour-a-week parent coordinator paraprofessional on staff to help school staff and families build bridges. At least one school's coordinator has constructed a successful one via social media. It's a model that could be successfully duplicated at other schools.

Some will cheer and some will jeer whoever is ultimately selected to serve first as interim and later as permanent MPS superintendent, but I have faith that the school board can make the right choice for my children and all Milwaukee's children, and I believe that we need to make ourselves part of the discussion and work with the board.
