Remedial college classes: A view from the high school side

Published July 14, 2015

A new state law directs UW system schools to report a new set of data to the legislature and the state Department of Public Instruction. This is about remedial college classes, how many students are taking them and what high schools these students graduated from. But remedial classes at UW are not a new phenomenon, nor the result of some recent dumbing-down of high school curricula or the inevitable decline of academic quality in public schools.

Are Republicans trying to turn the UW into the University of Phoenix?

Published June 3, 2015

Yes, I'm being a bit hyperbolic but not by much. When I read the so-called UW "reforms" that passed the Joint Finance Committee the other day, that's what popped into my mind: The Republican vision for the UW sort of reminds me of University of Phoenix. And, no, that is not a good thing.

The Art of the 21st Birthday (Midweek Musings)

"Is this shirt too much?" My best friend questioned, tugging at a zipper attached to her borrowed blouse. It was Saturday night. Our busy summers, which had so far made good on the Ladytron lyrics,"They only want you when you're 17/When you're 21, you're no fun," had ke...
