Former alderman, boxing champ Orville Pitts passes away

When Orville Pitts was elected Milwaukee alderman in 1968, his political future looked as bright as the one that had seemed in store for Pitts in the boxing ring a decade earlier. But unlike the knockout that ended his boxing career, his downfall in the political arena was self-inflicted and a drawn-out process featuring, in random order, booze, drugs, hookers, the devil and Richard M. Nixon. Pitts died Tuesday at 81, after a long illness.

After months of meetings, statements, editorials and heated debates, the Milwaukee Common Council voted down a motion to reconsider the streetcar proposal, 6-9, moving forward with Mayor Barrett's $124 million Milwaukee streetcar proposal.

Common Council delays final streetcar vote until Feb. 10

This morning, the Milwaukee Common Council voted 10-5 in favor of Mayor Barrett's hotly debated Milwaukee streetcar plan. However, the final approval for the long-argued streetcar will still be delayed until the council's next meeting on Feb. 10.
