Recently, Redbar opened in St. Francis. The space, which formerly housed Majdecki's and later, Cool Waters, has been remodeled inside and out. It's now aptly painted red and the interior is a tribute to aspects of Milwaukee history, from vintage beer signs to sports bobble heads to an antique motorcycle license plate.

Since it opened a couple years back on a St. Francis side street, Cool Water has -- like any restaurant -- faced it share of challenges, including a location that is a little off the beaten path. But these days the place is as vibrant ever, thanks to some recent tweaks, and with the addition of kitchen veteran Andy Phillips.

At just 24, Waukesha native Nick Koehler isn't your average bartender. First off, he works in St. Francis, at Cool Water Bar & Grill, and has experience behind the rail at Iron Horse Hotel, Umami Moto, The Ambassador Hotel and Meze Lounge.
He majored in finance, but he's got mad mixology skills, too, and he's currently studying hard to ace the sommelier certification exam in autumn.

After a few visits to Cool Water Bar and Grill, 2247 E. St. Francis Ave., St. Francis, the evolving concept seems confusing -- but not in a bad way. The simple truth is, Cool Water has a great kitchen and great product, but it needs to step up the service.
