Last year was definitely the year of Field Report. Almost as soon as the Milwaukee-based roots rock band changed its name from Conrad Plymouth, big things began happening: there was a record deal, an acclaimed debut, a national media blitz and some high-profile touring slots, including opening for Counting Crows. But, believe it or not, saying frontman Christopher Porter, next week's Turner Hall show is the band's first headlining gig at home.

As Milwaukee's own Field Report wends its way around the East Coast and back toward Milwaukee for its hometown gig opening for Counting Crows on July 25 at the BMO Harris Pavilion on the Summerfest grounds, we caught up with singer and songwriter Christopher Porterfield to see how things are going for Brew City's hottest band in 2012.

A few weeks after Counting Crows' Adam Duritz was singing praises of Milwaukee's Field Report (formerly Conrad Plymouth) all over Twitter, the Milwaukee group is hitting the road for a West Coast and down South tour with Megafaun, and takes a couple tracks national via Spin Magazine.

Only those who'd ventured to the Counting Crows Web site, pre-concert, or those aware of Duritz's affinity for the previous year's style of show could have anticipated musical-melding that was in store for them Saturday night. Contrary to its campaign, this was not a two-hour set list of Counting Crows' greatest hits or even a half hour of Augustana with the remainder filled by Duritz and company.
