After winning scholarships in national high school auto repair contests, Nicholas Moroder was speeding toward a career in the car business. He took a detour, after he found he hated working on other people's cars. Moroder found a happier application of his mechanical skills - for him and his customers - by fixing bicycles. And the discovery led to the start of the BelgianWerkx bicycle studio and gallery in Mequon, set to open on Jan. 14.

Over the course of my first season racing in the Wisconsin Cycling Association Cyclocross series, "what's cyclocross?" has been the common reaction from friends. "Thirty minutes of gasping for air" has been my best answer. With a little time to reflect, I can elaborate.

Fast and furious, often dirty, cyclocross has been the fastest growing form of bike racing in the country. Participation more than doubled from 32,000 racers to 72,000 from 2005 to 2010, according to USA Cycling. The Wisconsin Cycling Association's 15-race series has been part of the boom.
