Cudahy artist and surfer inspired by California culture

Dave Hansen was born in California but his family moved away when he was very young and before he could remember living there. Today, Hansen lives in Cudahy with his wife and 2-year-old son and works as a full-time, freelance artist who creates tiki carvings and other "Polynesian pop" pieces. He also surfs on Lake Michigan.

The Malt Shoppe offers beer, beer and more beer

The Malt Shoppe, 813 N. Mayfair Rd., does not offer a single flavor of ice cream, but that's because it's not that kind of malt shop. It does, however, have more than 900 different beers from around the world, including places not readily associated with brewing like Kenya, Brazil, Vietnam, Slovakia and Singapore.

Hansen's Dessert Creations is a labor of love launched this past November. He's starting small, offering five tried-and-true delicacies made only with local products and without additives (the only exception is Mexican vanilla).
