It was the beginnings of a long, hot and life-changing summer of 1972 when I got the news. I had just graduated from high school the previous fall, and as a graduating present my parents and my cousins parents agreed to send my cousin Cree and me to France and England to see a bit of the world and then escort Cree's sister Barbara home from her studies at the university of Lyon in France.

It's 1977, I am 10 years old and I buy my first single: "Sound and Vision" by David Bowie. It's an oddity of a track, all wandering instrumentation, sparse vocals and washy synth. But it was the beginning of my relationship with the Thin White Duke.

Personally, I'm not so enamored with all this celebrity BS. I've never understood why one would be so willing to put people in the public eye on a pedestal, just because they play a guitar or act in a movie. There are notable exceptions, of course: I think I was more than a little timid when Stephen Dorf introduced me to Madonna. And it was a trip telling Bono about a church we were recording in, only for him to respond dryly: "Take the pews out, Jonny, but leave God in."

Listen carefully and you may hear a star forming on National Avenue. At least, that's what Joe Puerta, owner of The Exchange Recording Complex in Milwaukee, is hoping. The Exchange Recording Complex, an unremarkable brown-and-orange building with no signs and nothing to set it apart from the other buildings on its block, has been a working recording studio since the '70s, hosting both regional names and international stars.
