It always makes me smile that the Commissioner of Baseball is not only from Milwaukee but has his office here. It's very cool. It's always great that he still hangs out at his favorite Milwaukee spots.

In past years, this category was dominated by frozen custard stands, but in recent years, Milwaukee has seen an explosion of new offerings like frozen yogurt, gelato and specialty ice cream shops. But custard is still the king in Milwaukee, and once again, Kopp's ran away from the field to win the title of Milwaukee's Best Frozen Treat.

Since 1984, July has been National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month - today! - has been National Ice Cream Day. Did you know that nearly 10 percent of all milk produced in the U.S. becomes ice cream? And 63 percent of that is consumed in Milwaukee? OK, I made that last stat up, but we sure do love our frozen dairy.

Before anyone licked a cone at Kopp's, slurped a malt at Culver's or dug into a sundae at Leon's, Paul Gilles was selling frozen custard at the corner of 75th and Blue Mound. He bought the land when Bluemound was a gravel road and erected in 1938 what is now the oldest operating custard stand in Milwaukee.
