On Monday, Milwaukee Public Schools teachers and school psychologists received a letter from outgoing Superintendent Gregory Thornton notifying them that their March 28 paycheck would include a one percent bonus. But some view the bonus as an end-run around collective bargaining.

It's old news now that Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gregory Thornton is stepping down to take the helm of the public schools in Baltimore. His four-year tenure here sure seemed brief, but according to those who know, that's about average for leaders of big urban districts. Finding and keeping good leadership at the top is just hard in districts like MPS.

One of the legacies of outgoing MPS Superintendent Gregory Thornton will be the re-centralization of many items previously included in individual school budgets. Will that be a positive legacy? I want to hear your thoughts.

The Milwaukee Public Schools are about to begin a dance that is so stale it should probably be pulled off the shelf. Superintendent Gregory Thornton is leaving MPS. And the school board will again do the "Find a New Chief Dance."

Basically, what was up for a vote at a school board meeting last week was exactly what MTEA wanted - a process that empowered community voice over administrative fiat - and MTEA beat it back, and called it a win. After the meeting, MTEA said, "now we can start the community process at our schools," which, you know, is exactly what they would have been doing had the vote gone the other way, too. And with district funding, personnel and support for the process, which now we don't have.
