MPS: Let the search begin

On Tuesday, the Baltimore City Public Schools board approved the four-year, nearly $1 million contract that will bring MPS Superintendent Dr. Gregory Thornton to that city on July 1. So, it was no big surprise that Thornton submitted his letter of resignation to the Milwaukee Board of School Directors Wednesday, effective June 30. Now, the work of finding a replacement officially begins.

On Monday, Milwaukee Public Schools teachers and school psychologists received a letter from outgoing Superintendent Gregory Thornton notifying them that their March 28 paycheck would include a one percent bonus. But some view the bonus as an end-run around collective bargaining.

It's old news now that Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gregory Thornton is stepping down to take the helm of the public schools in Baltimore. His four-year tenure here sure seemed brief, but according to those who know, that's about average for leaders of big urban districts. Finding and keeping good leadership at the top is just hard in districts like MPS.
