If we're going to have the "guns on campus debate" - and due to warring pieces of legislation, we must - let's at least argue the issue using accurate information. And according to that information, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus, if it were a city, would be one of the safest around.

Milwaukee Police Department Chief Edward Flynn is calling for stricter sentencing for violent offenders to counter the city's spike in homicides, which are up almost 70 percent this year compared to the same time period last year. According to a report from Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, Flynn made the comments at a public forum hosted by Mike Gousha at Marquette University.

America doesn't have a gun problem, the argument goes; it has a car problem! This is perhaps my favorite of all the pro-gun defenses - favorite being in this case a relative term. But I need to be clear about this: I would give just about anything if guns could be licensed, regulated and policed the way automobiles are in this country.

State Representatives LaTonya Johnson and Joel Kleefisch found a rare common sense place when they proposed creating the mandatory minimum sentences for felons who possess firearms. That's right: A Milwaukee Democrat and an Oconomowoc Republican came together on a gun issue and managed to gain the support of a majority of others in the Assembly from both parties despite earlier dissent. That's pretty remarkable.
