America doesn't have a gun problem, the argument goes; it has a car problem! This is perhaps my favorite of all the pro-gun defenses - favorite being in this case a relative term. But I need to be clear about this: I would give just about anything if guns could be licensed, regulated and policed the way automobiles are in this country.

State Representatives LaTonya Johnson and Joel Kleefisch found a rare common sense place when they proposed creating the mandatory minimum sentences for felons who possess firearms. That's right: A Milwaukee Democrat and an Oconomowoc Republican came together on a gun issue and managed to gain the support of a majority of others in the Assembly from both parties despite earlier dissent. That's pretty remarkable.

I looked at family photos of the 5-year-old girl who was shot to death this week in Milwaukee. They were even more heartbreaking than the single angelic professional photo the media's been highlighting. You see Laylah Petersen doing things all little girls do. Trick or treating. Going to the zoo. In church. Swinging. Taking goofy selfies for the camera. I have a 9-year-old girl. She does all of those things. Laylah Petersen must be regarded now, in a sense, as this community's child, too.

Joe Wilcox is dead today because he fell for the cockamamie belief that carrying a concealed weapon was a good thing.

I often wonder if public officials give any consideration to the historical lens that will define their current level of enlightenment decades from now. History will show there is a "right" side and a "wrong" side to many of the issues we debate today, including health care reform, gay marriage and gun control.
