Crowds love "A Cudahy Caroler Christmas," being staged for the seventh time by In Tandem. And the reason they are staging it again is clear - this one makes money for the small organization. But, I can find almost nothing about this play that is meaningful or interesting or even entertaining.

It will probably never replace "A Christmas Carol" as a Milwaukee tradition, but "A Cudahy Caroler Christmas" comes close with a legion of loyal followers. The musical, by Anthony Wood, opens Nov. 30 at In Tandem Theatre.

We certainly go to the theater to be entertained, and the lord knows, we need our diversions from politics and the news these days. But the juice that energizes theater, keeping it vital and fresh, is found in plays that enthusiastically engage tough issues. Our local stage groups have shown admirable awareness of the world around them in programing their 2012-13 seasons. It will be a year of substance.

"Who Killed Santa?" and "Scrooge in Rouge" have returned to Milwaukee stages for another holiday season, and the folks who create the costumes, props and scenery at the Milwaukee Rep are offering their homemade crafts at a sale on Saturday.
