It was 11 years ago today when my mother called me from Milwaukee and told me Ron Cuzner had died that day at 64. I was stunned into a Cuzner-like pregnant-pause silence. I had moved to Madison in 1989, so I lost my close connection to Ron in those pre-radio streaming years. He had spun his last Ellington "Solitude" intro and uttered his last golden catch-phrase. He and his jazz program "The Dark Side" had finally moved on to the light.
For the past 22 years, jazz pianist Mark Davis has been doing his part to bring a love of jazz to people. When he's not teaching and guiding future jazz artists at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, he's playing jazz piano concerts across the state - such as an upcoming show this Sunday afternoon at Ascension Lutheran Church - giving audiences a different type of lesson in jazz appreciation.
For anyone who attend local music concerts fairly regularly, chances are you've heard saxophonist and flutist Aaron Gardner. These days, he's not usually the front-and-center guy, but his talent and signature style of playing have contributed greatly to a variety of local bands and musicians.
It was the summer of 2012 when Jerry Grillo met pianist Joe Kral at Angelo's Piano Lounge. Kral was sitting in for the evening's performances, but Grillo could he was a special musician, one he'd want to work with. Grillo's sense appears to have been correct, as the two have continued to work together over the past year, including on Grillo's latest - and potentially last - recording, "Music Box."

There is something about jazz that I just don't get. You may say that it's because I'm not cultured enough but I think I've done a pretty good job at rounding myself out. I have seen, participated and appreciated opera, jazz, blues and theatre and I've had fine wines and good cigars...
