There is no joy in Mudville and, as of yesterday, no college basketball in Wisconsin. Marquette and Wisconsin both exited the stage at Taco Bell Arena, breaking hearts and brackets across the land while making sports fans look forward to the start of the Brewers' regular season. Marquette lost to Missouri; the Badgers lost their game with Xavier.

The tension was palpable inside the Marquette Union Sports Annex. Outside of Finals Week and the occasional unannounced inspection by a resident advisor, you don't sense that kind of gut-wrenching drama on campus. But, it was present in abundance Friday afternoon as the Golden Eagles outlasted Utah State, 58-57, to win their first-round game in the NCAA Tournament.

Marquette's loss to Villanova in the Big East tournament may have been a blessing in disguise. In order to perform well in the NCAA Tournament, though, the Golden Eagles will need steadier play from their senior leader and all-time leading scorer, Jerel McNeal. Some uncharacteristic miscues by McNeal hurt Marquette down the stretch at Madison Square Garden and he'll need to tighten things up next week.

When all is said and done, fans won't be sitting around bars talking about the Golden Eagles' late-season fade, Dominic James' broken foot or even Jerel McNeal's all-time scoring record. Someday, when people talk about Marquette's senior class of 2009, the only stat that will matter is 92: the number of games McNeal, James, Wes Matthews and Dwight Burke combined to win in their four years on Wisconsin Ave.

They were undersized. They had a short bench. They had a no-name coach. Yet, Marquette showed its critics that it had the moxie to be a March contender. Many of those same critics were quick to write off the Golden Eagles when point guard Dominic James broke his foot. Yet, despite a pair of losses, Marquette still could be a dangerous force when the Big East and NCAA Tournaments kick off later this month.
