When it comes to the classic story of "A Christmas Carol," Scrooge has always been the star. But just as important to the story are the Cratchits, who embody the Christmas spirit and the human spirit so essential to Dickens's fable. For the past few years, the two characters have been played in the Milwaukee Rep's annual production by the same two Milwaukee actors: Jonathan Wainwright and Marti Gobel.

"The Good Father," which opened over the weekend at the Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and runs through Oct. 12, was the first play by Irish playwright Christian O'Reilly, and it has rarely been produced in this country. But it's a first rate story about a young couple and their year-long journey that carries them from the ultimate casual to the significantly meaningful.

We all know what a "Scrooge" is: a bitter, hateful penny-pincher with not an ounce of fun, joy or charity in his cold, cold heart. Well, watch your opinion change if you are lucky enough to see the Milwaukee Rep's 38th consecutive production of that classic holiday tale, "A Christmas Carol," at the glorious Pabst Theater.

The Milwaukee Rep has opened its 37th production of "A Christmas Carol," the Charles Dickens masterpiece of a story about hope and despair, darkness and bitterness and both the quest and capacity for redemption. It is a sumptuous production, a feast for the eyes during the holiday season.

Smaller theater companies, like those in Milwaukee, often have to try for shows that will bring in an audience and not take too many risks. Milwaukee Chamber Theatre will step out on that limb of risk when they open "Broken and Entered" by Madison playwright Kurt McGinnis Brown Sept. 26.
