It may be Brew City, but custard is no small matter in Milwaukee, where everyone has his or her own favorite custard stand. This, of course, may go a long way toward explaining our waistlines. But hey, what's the point of livin' if you can't go a-lickin' custard every now and again.

Despite the fact that it's cold outside, I wake up in the middle of the night a lot these days thinking about frozen custard. That's because I'm co-authoring a book about this delicacy at the moment and it's consuming me even more than I consume custard, which is saying something.

Steamy and stormy. That's how I think of Milwaukee summers. And incredibly hectic, too. Summer in the city is always crammed with more festivals, fairs and block parties than civically necessary or nutritionally advisable. But it's an integral element of my longtime summer routine - returning back home for 10 days of fun - and I'm too old to stop now.
