Steve Patterson grew up answering phones for a fledgling NBA franchise called the Milwaukee Bucks, of which is father, Ray, was a part owner. He watched his dad help build the only NBA champion in city history before moving south and then embarking on his own career in professional sports. This weekend, he returns for basketball and a stop at Mader's as the new athletics director at the University of Texas.

The Bucks seem almost to be like a car stuck in the mud. The wheels turn and they move forward a little and then they fall back. Over and over. But if there is one thing I've learned over a long time it's that when you try to fix things like an educational system or a professional basketball team, there is no silver bullet.

While Lew Alcindor was certainly the superstar he was advertised to be coming out of UCLA, the glue to the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks was Oscar Robertson, who would have never come here had it not been for an ugly, bitter divorce with his previous team, the Cincinnati Royals.
