The kitchen at The Eatery on Farwell, 2014 N. Farwell Ave., has such long hours that it can really boast something for almost everyone, and at almost any time of day. The restaurant opens at 8 a.m. and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. I stopped in on a Friday, of course, so I could try the fish fry.

If Byron Kilbourn is going to watch me eat lunch, I wish he'd at least try to look a little happier. Amid the maritime decor adorning the interior of Port of Call Bistro and Beer Garden, 106 W. Wells St., hangs a stern portrait of Kilbourn, who founded his Kilbourntown west of the river. His face reminds us we're in HIS Milwaukee and the menu at Port of Call keeps reminding diners they're in Brew City, too.

Now that our office is Downtown, I'm checking out some new-to-me places for lunch and revisiting some old noon-hour friends, too. Today, I walked across the street to see if Waterfront Deli, 761 N. Water St., could satisfy my yen for a prosciutto panino.

It's always a pleasure to sample a restaurant's new menu. I find it's a bit like getting inside a chef's mind for a moment - and peering around at the ingenuity and imagination that lies there. I had the opportunity to do just that as I joined part of the crew of OnMilwaukee.com for a retreat luncheon at the Rumpus Room last week.

Molly Cool's Seafood Tavern has settled in nicely in the sprawling riverfront restaurant space at 1110 N. Old World 3rd St. that had briefly been home to Kincaid's and was long the site of Third Street Pier. Recently, I lunched on the patio.
