I admit that sometimes these days, I'm a little disappointed by the Summerfest schedule. But I don't blame the Big Gig. Bob Babisch and his team have a lot of experience and they know what fest-goers in Milwaukee want. It's just that my tastes often diverge (pun intended) and it's seemed that the bands I want to see aren't "Summerfest bands." But that's changed a bit over time and in the biggest way in recent memory this year. Look at opening day, for a start.

A Concert For Eileen will take place Saturday, March 10 at Shank Hall. The event is a fundraiser for mother and artist Eileen Worman who is in need of a kidney. Multiple Milwaukee bands joined forces to help with medical bills, and a few of the bands reunited for the event.

It took about a year for me to stumble into the music scene after moving to Milwaukee in 1983. Jay French was already there -- firmly entrenched in that scene -- when I arrived. Last week, Jay died, leaving behind two great kids, and even if a lot of us didn't see him very often, his passing leaves a hole in the music scene.
