Charles Hausmann grew in a neighborhood now referred to as the SOHI District. In an effort to revitalize the once-thriving community, he purchased buildings, and on one of them, commissioned an artist to paint a massive mural of a phoenix on the south side of the building to represent rebirth.

Have you seen this mural in Walker's Point, on the corner of 1st Street and Pittsburgh Avenue? I drive by it almost every day and finally got some information about it.

"For many students, what is depicted in the mural is part of everyday life," says Dal Drummer, artistic director at the Lincoln Center of the Arts, an MPS middle school. Lincoln recently agreed to house the mural after it was nixed at the courthouse.

Adam Nilson is one of Milwaukee's most employed artists. Recently, despite major ups and downs, he's completed the Mona Lisa mural at Sven's CafĂ©, restoration work for Cans Canteen, a full makeover for Hairy's Hair Bar and The Groove.
