As the Green Bay Packers begin the home stretch of the 2012 season with four NFC North games in their final five, we'll find out soon if what the players were saying following Sunday's 38-10 loss were just excuses for a one-game hiccup, or reasons behind an eventual slide down the standings.

The Packers improved to 3-0 on the season Sunday after beating the Bears in Chicago, 27-17. This week's recap has far more good than bad or ugly, but there is always something to build on, something to learn from and some things that we never should have seen in the first place.

The Packers defense was gouged for 475 yards Sunday in a 30-23 victory at Carolina. The secondary, especially, was porous, allowing rookie quarterback Cam Newton to throw for 423 yards on 28-of-46 passing and gain another 53 on the ground. Fortunately, the Packers were again able to capitalize on turnovers, four of them, to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

After starting the season with Super Bowl aspirations, the Packers -- 8-5 after a 7-3 loss Sunday in Detroit -- could find themselves on the outside looking in when the postseason gets underway next month.
