The scandalous bite is gone from this "Tartuffe," but it's been replaced by taking a 400-year-old classic French comedy and turning it into present day laughs that mixes "Laugh-In" the "Marx Brothers" with a little bit of Reverend Jimmy Swaggart thrown in for good measure. Only Dale Gutzman could come up with a concoction like the production that opened Thursday at Off The Wall Theatre.

In a place that has hosted such decadent theater as a blistering "Cabaret" and a shockingly brutal "Trainspotting" it is stunningly surprising to find a morality play being staged in the tiny black box of Off The Wall Theatre.But that's what you get with the production of "Spring Awakening," the multiple Tony Award winning musical with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik.

"Camino Real" is one of the plays by Tennessee Williams that is rarely produced. It is a troubling play without a real story, but it's an important play and Dale Guzman stages an amazing production at Off the Wall Theatre.

"God of Carnage" is a biting comedy about two couples who turn from civilized to animals before our very eyes. But when two of the actors can't remember their lines, the evening turns out to be a real dud.

The Dale Gutzman version of "Cabaret," which opened Wednesday night and runs through Sept. 28, is a dark retelling of a story that mixed sex, violence, longing and fear into two and half hours of mesmerizing theater. The menace of the play at Off the Wall Theatre is as intimate as any I have seen before.
